Assistant Head of Lower School
Brenda Balfour holds an Honours degree in Outdoor Recreation from Lakehead University and a Master’s in Science from Indiana University. Before earning her Bachelor of Education at Brock University, she had received numerous awards for teaching at the college level: she was named Teacher of the Year by Green Mountain College in Vermont (where she taught in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies), and Educator of the Year by the New England Therapeutic Recreation Association.
She joined the HTS faculty in 2002. Brenda spent her first five years here as a homeroom teacher in Grade 5 as well as teaching Lower School physical and health education classes. In 2010, she assumed the role of Junior School Coordinator and Grade 6 homeroom teacher. In 2012, she transitioned into the role of Assistant Head of Lower School, though she has continued to teach Social Studies, PHE, or Math each year. Brenda completed the Diploma of Independent School Leadership through the Canadian Association of Independent Schools in 2014, and completed the CAIS Next Step Program in July, 2017. Past experience with adventure-based learning activities helps her to maintain a positive and engaging learning environment in the classroom. Brenda enjoys spending time with her family skiing in the winter and cottaging in the summer.
